“Birds” is published to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Japanese editor and author Seigow Matsuoka. The book brings together more than 30 sketches and drawings of birds, discovered after his death in a corner of his office. Matsuoka, who in 2004 wrote the book “Flowers, Birds, Wind, and Moon” about the connections between nature and Japanese culture, likely drew these birds as simple exercises. With striking simplicity, they each express a well-observed vitality and airiness.
“In conclusion, I wish to emphasize that birds were seen as go-betweens connecting here and there.”
― Seigow Matsuoka
