“With the hoods, I wanted to paint something that was already painted.”
― Richard Prince
Published to coincide with a major exhibition at Gagosian, New York, “Hoods, 1988–2013” documents Richard Prince’ 25-year body of work of the “Hoods” series.
For “Hoods,” the celebrated artist collected hoods from American muscle cars of the 1960s and ‘70s, then applied a body filler used in the automotive industry (“Bondo”) and sanded and painted them. The finished works vary greatly in texture, color, shape and size. The photographs in the “Hoods, 1988–2013” not only document the finished works but also the hoods’ gradual transformation into pieces that explore physical and metaphorical abstraction as well as American postwar trends like the muscle car culture, the DIY boom, as well as avant-garde and readymade art.
