Designed by Australian artist Martin Sharp in collaboration with King Kong, Sex! is among the most iconic posters to emerge from London's psychedelic underground. Published by Big O Posters in 1967, it distils Sharp's distinctive visual language—surreal collage, Victorian engraving, Pop graphics and saturated colour—into an image that became emblematic of the counterculture.
After relocating from Sydney to London in 1966, Sharp became a central figure in the city's underground scene, co-founding Oz magazine and producing posters for artists including Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Cream. His imagery drew equally from Art Nouveau, comic books, fin-de-siècle illustration and psychedelic culture, creating a graphic style that remains immediately recognisable.
Printed on reflective silver foil paper, Sex! is among Sharp's most sought-after poster designs. The work is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia and remains an enduring symbol of the visual culture of the 1960s.
