DAIDO MORIYAMA / Hiroko

Published by Akio Nagasawa Publishing in 2021, Hiroko is the second volume in Daido Moriyama's Woman in the Night series. Bound in a silkscreen-printed canvas cover, the book unfolds as a lyrical meditation on memory, desire and absence, centred on a woman Moriyama once knew in Osaka's Minami district.

Rather than constructing a documentary portrait, Moriyama assembles a fragmented sequence of photographs in which the city, its streets and its fleeting encounters become inseparable from recollection. Grainy, high-contrast images dissolve into a narrative shaped as much by memory as by observation, reflecting the subjective and deeply personal approach that has defined Moriyama's practice for more than five decades.

The volume concludes with a short afterword by the artist, presented in both Japanese and English, recalling Hiroko as she survives in memory rather than in history.
