A landmark survey of international advertising from the mid-1960s, AD 1 brings together nearly 400 advertisements from Europe, the United States and elsewhere, presented across English, German and French. Edited by German graphic designer and typographer Kurt Weidemann, the book treats advertising as a field of visual communication, documenting the period's rapidly developing approaches to photography, typography, illustration and graphic design.
The selection ranges from corporate and industrial advertising to fashion, food, banking, publishing and consumer goods, providing an unusually broad picture of the visual language of commercial culture in the 1960s. Particularly compelling for its juxtaposition of radically different approaches to image-making and typography, AD 1 is as much a document of graphic design history as it is a survey of advertising.
